Shame on you Lester Holt for your poor interviewing of Gabby Douglas, first rehashing the twitter comments about her hair and second diminishing the impact and selling short Gabby's historic title of first Black all around gold medalist in women's gymnastics.
Of COURSE she is a role model for all girls, but how dare you pretend that somehow Aly, McKayla, Kyla and Jordyn will have the same influence on young black women. This is why today we have organizations such as the National Society of Black Engineers, the Student National Medical Association, and the Black Lawyers Association. If you do not feel a sense of pride and inspiration seeing someone who looks like you excelling in a specific field or sport, that is fine. Perhaps you should visit cities like Philadelphia, Oakland, or Detroit where Black and African American children of color need role models. Perhaps your ratings tell you that Blacks and African Americans don't watch Dateline so you felt this was acceptable, but I found your comments offensive.
Race is but one characteristic that the world noticed about Gabby FOLLOWING the first characteristic: excellence in her field. As Black person, I felt inspired and a sense of pride watching someone who could be my sister, daughter, cousin, niece win the world over with her impeccable work ethic and commitment to excellence.
I hope you find your way back to responsible reporting.
