Days after graduation, a high school valedictorian is murdered in Montana. More than three decades later, Dateline turns up new witnesses who help write a new ending to the story.
Whispers in a Small Town is a two-hour Dateline report airing Sunday, June 10th, at 7pm/6c.

Its very sad that soeone innocent spent 25 yearsin jail out f fear..This is our justice system...Very very sad..I feel so sorry for him..Hopefully he gets out...Our justice system is terrible!!!!
This is sad he was forced to confess out of fear......
Very sad our justice
system is corrupt....
Cases like these are all too typical. Law enforcement agencies will go out of their way to insist they are right in their convictions, even going so far as to ignore new evidence. They do NOT want to admit that they made a mistake. It makes them look bad. Justice be damned.
I have seen this too many times in the area I live. It is disgusting
to know the government only wants SOMEONE in prison. No matter
who it is
Cases such as this are all too common. Law enforcement agencies and prosecuters are more concerned with a conviction rate than they are about the truth. This includes coerced confessions. Even when presented with new evidence, they do NOT want to admit that they were wrong. A travesty of justice.
There are times when you just know when someone is telling the truth. And to spend 28 years in prison when you are innocent is just so sad. Those prosecutors are not going to admit to a mistake..never will happen.
I'm sickened to watch this. I have been living this story for the past 4 years. My son law was falsely accused in Florida due to a female who lied…yet she told her friends all about what she had done to the lives of two innocent men. They got life…she got to continue to party. The law enforcement of this country is scary. It is no longer the home of the free and the brave.
I'm praying Barry Beach gets out. And Sissy Atkinson gets her due.
I agree. I believe with all my heart he is innocent! Fear & corrupt cops can make you do things you normally wouldn't do.
i for one dont trust that 2 term governor who was the prosecutor....a snake
I have watched the faces of all parties, listened to each account, and have come to one conclusion...Barry Beach is innocent! I believe a thorough investigation concerning the handling of this case is warranted; and should begin with an audit of the evidence logs as requested by the Centurians. At the very least, enough of a question has been raised to cause doubt in this case. It seems that one thing has not changed in all this.... Barry's story. He is innocent.
This misjustice of Mr Beach should have the Montana Justice system and the ex-governer prosecuter as a whole reviewed. What a buch of Bull___t!!
I'm shocked. Barry Beach is not guilty. Look who the state prosecutor was…..the governor…
I've been living this nightmare for the past 4 years. My son in law was sentenced to life for a crime he didn't commit. Corrupt judges, prosecutors, state attorneys were to blame for his incarceration.
The law enforcement in the country is scary. We are no longer the home of the free and the brave.
Once they get their fangs into you they will never let go. The actual perp could come in with a Youtube video and they will not let you go. That's a sad testament to vengeful prosecutors and lying cops. I've seen this too many times. The word "sad" is not overused in these comments.
Such a travesty of justice
It's a terrible thing to put a man in prison for yrs on end when he is innocent. People do make mistakes. But when it's provence they made a mistake & won't admitted it & leave that innocent man in prison to rot....then they should be locked up for the same amount of yrs!
I don't believe I've ever heard a story quite like this one. You mean to tell me that with all of that blood, messy crime scene and a fingerprint no specific person could be found guilty instead of a person who gave a confession under duress, that's unbelievable!
It's a shame that an innocent man is sentenced for a crime he did not commit, because the sheriff department and prosecutors will not admit that they, most likely, made a mistake. This is all too common with prosecuting officials and law enforcement that fail to look at the evidence (or lack of) in its totality.
How do you convict someone with no physical evidence at all, there's always something. In this case someone was nearby and heard the other girls killing the victim, one of them said that she even delivered a kick or two to the head of the victim. My question is what happens to the girls who committed this crime, someone else has been doing their time. Mr. Beach when cleared should sue someone anyone involved with this horrible case.
I just finished viewing this story and I totally agree with the judge for a retrial. As he said the linchpin was the girl who testified to hearing the murder done by other girls; that was overwhelming. To support this there were several witnesses saying they heard the same thing and then his sister saying he was in bed. And the conversation between the police depts could obviously transfer the details of the murder scene. Police can intimidate young people very easily just like the military can and so I believe that is exactly what happened using the information they got from Montana. And that confession was the only thing the state had to convict him since there was no physical evidence linking him to the murder but a palm print they never got a match for.
If he had not confessed as he did I'm sure he would not have been convicted in the first place given the lack of evidence.
Overall with the confession I can see the system convicting him but with the new witnesses I'm sure all charges will be dismissed. Life is unfair and this case demonstrates it again but given that confession I without the witnesses that came forward I don't see the system at fault. This unfortunate person gave the system the means to convict him and he paid the price with thirty years of his life. From what I saw of his demeanor I believe he will rise above it all and succeed in his life. My hat is off to him and his mother.
One of the BEST Datelines that we have ever watched...we were spellbound!! Without a doubt coverups prevailed and an innocent man should be free> Thanks to a fair judge in another part of Montanna who looked at all the facts that were presented, and everyone's faith in God.
I was watching the entire show when it was interrupted by storm warnings in my area. I missed the part where they had the second trial and/or agreed to let him out. It said there were new witnesses. What happened there? I saw the first trial and all the witnesses when he was still denied.
I had tv paused and hit the wrong button! I was at the hearing part where Govenor was coming in....what happened next? I think he is innocent but can't find anything out....help
I agree, this should of never happened but, it does everyday in our world just as most of the "posters "here have already said, "swift justice "for the sheriff & state ,the hell with the truth! This man can NEVER get those years back or time spent with his father who has passed! Let this innocent man go free and may the "real killers" get there due! I feel that this state owes this man a great deal and he should collect on it!
I Live in Montana and I am very upset hearing this story, I can't believe our justice system is so against finding the true killer of a crime. I think Barry is not guilty of this and I hope he is let out, and I hope Montana has to compensate for his lost
Hooray for the Judge who had the guts to step above his contemporaries and issue a just decision! And thank God for the group who took his case and proved his innocence.! And thanks to Dateline for helping to turn things around for Barry! I just pray that justice will prevail here...it is sooo long in coming!
Where are the outraged citizenry of Montana frothing to string up the lazy sheriff and ex-governor/prosecutor who hopped on the easiest target without a shred of physical evidence. With what they had on Barry, they couldn't have even gotten a judge to grant a search warrant. And the prosecutor has the guts to equate the results of a coerced confession with physical evidence. Electorate, beware of the slick and the glib! Congratulations with Centurion Ministries.
