Keith Morrison tells the story of a well-liked and extremely wealthy businessman, Ken Dolezsar, who was gunned down in cold blood just outside Salt Lake City, Utah. Police turn their attention to a downtown loft, where an eclectic group of upscale residents live. When one resident is arrested for the murder, his loft friends and neighbors rally to his defense. And as the case heads to trial, they confront a suspicion: did police have the wrong neighbor?
Suspicion airs Friday, February 3rd, at 10pm/9c on Dateline NBC.

Watching "Suspicion" on Dateline. I would say that the recorded voice wasn't Chris's. Put a gotte and wig on David Novak and you have the guy pulling the trigger
Anyone can hear that the voice on the voice mail does not match up! Is everyone deaf and dumb here??! No one thought about questioning David?? I am not an investigator but someone slept on the job here!
Yes David has the nose profile as well. This took a very brazen, quick minded, narcissistic personality to pin this crime and walk away free. He outsmarted the jurors as well... I do hope this 2nd victim, Chris, is set free from jail by getting another trial.
I hope that by my posting, others posts and Date Line's story, an organization which is affiliated with wrongful convictions will take a look at this case. Clearly, the voice on the tape is not that of Christopher. I work with a criminal attorney and absolutely believe that this man is innocent.
I have had it! I watch Dateline religiously and yet this is the 1st time I felt cheated, when they had a clear chance to uncover the clandestine plan to frame Chris, and yet he is still incarcerated! His wife had his alibi. There must be more to the case than the news can portray, I suspect... I hate these outcomes that don't involve the apprehension of the culprit. Grrrr. Makes me want to vomit...
There should be a Federal law to allow the FBI to step in when a local system is not working and an innocent man is in Jail!!!!!!!!
- The Police did not see the empty shell case in the gun case!!! Was the gun case as big as a closet? It shouldn't have been admitted in court. Easy to plant evidence.
- The witness. Very suspicious. He needs to be investigated. His story kept changing.
- The recorded voice!! Come on. No need to be a sound technician to see that it is not Chris.
What good is it to be a US citizen living in the US if you can be put in jail arbitrarily and have no recourse!!! The Senator of that State should be on the case to ask the FBI to step in. It is my intuition that many people were paid off. SAD, really sad and angry.
Why wasn't there a "voiceprint" performed on the voice-mail tape? Or is that just something that you see on "T.V.?" It would seem that "forensic science" WOULD be able to determine if it WAS the convicted man--or NOT!
A voiceprint could ruin the prosecution's case, so they would do whatever they could to prevent it from being done. I don't know why the defense didn't do it unless the judge did not allow it. I have witnessed judges make rulngs about what they would and would not allow to be presented, and every ruling limited the accused's defense. Once the prosecutor, judge, police have decided someone is guilty, they stop looking for anything that could clear the accused and concentrate only on what can "prove" their theory. They assume a family member will lie when they confirm an alibi, so no matter how true the alibi is, if it cannot be independently confirmed beyond the immediate family it is considered at best questionable.
Honestly, am I the only sane person left that can obviously tell that the voice on the phone and the voice of the accused do not! I expected more investigative reporting from dateline to help prove the accused innocent as he is not going to get a fair shake from a district attorney bent on making the pieces fit around the accused.
Clearly the voice mail was obviously not the accused, the pitch left on the voice mail is VERY different. Listen to the low pitch and the crackyness, and why didn"t they look into the neighbor? If there are thousands of people willing to pay a hitman $5000 less or more why wouldnt they look into someone that has publicly been given $1.8 million!!! If thats not enough where's the documentry has anyone seen it? Has any producer, camera man, manuiscript, where's the movie even a rough draft. Where did the neighbor go? And did anyone notice that there were social gatherings, had any of those taken place at their apt. or had the neighbor been in their apt. There too many loose strings to of been given a guilty decision. Just like police loss of custody in a murder case that is very important. Espically if they're neighbors. I feel that there should be an investigation granted or at least an appeal.
I would have to say that the voice on that voicemail sounded absolutely nothing like Chris. If you can tell there's such an extreme difference in voice just by listening I'm sure someone who's trained to listen to those sorts of things would quickly be able to tell that, that voicemail was left by someone else. The Police should be looking for Novak, it sounds to me like there's an awful lot more evidence pointing towards him.
It's pretty easy to tell that the voice mail is not the same voice that was on the phone, you don't need forensic to hear that. Sometimes the jury gets it wrong (eg: Cassie Anthony) I hope Ken's family get the justice they deserve, but with what I watched I would'nt put a man in jail for a day had I been in the jury box and heard the differences in the voices, they clearly are different. Hope they get the real murderer. I'm sure the police are convinced they have the killer already and, hope all who put this man in jail can sleep at night? Only my opinion.
I truly think they have the wrong man in prison. The voice on the voicemail and the voice on the phone is clearly 2 different men. I think they need to continue to investigate because looks are deceiving, and they have an innocent man in prison!!!
Justice was not served!!!!!!!Investigators just put another notch in their belt...an innocent man is in prison while the man who committed the perfect murder walks/lives freely.I'm sure the Utah Police Department, the lead detective, and Novak all continue to sleep soundly at night. What goes around comes around at some point...Kharma.
I am absolutely blown away that a convict is walking the streets innocent and an innocent man is serving 20 yrs for sleeping in his own bed!! What are the police doing? Nothing? I agree with all of the comments that Novak masterminded this whole thing - justice is not served just because "someone" is found guilty! Obviously, he'll do it again!! Please fight for this innocent man to be freed and have the courage to go after the TRUTH!! Having served on jury, you're not privy to all info that Dateline tells the public, however, clearly that voice is NOT Chris's! A voice analysis just would seem so automatic I don't get why his attorney didnt have that done! There are just too many unanswered questions and a guilty verdict seems insane = way too much doubt!! Neighbors believe its Novak, especially the one who asked him if he would mastermind a murder and he said yes! Eye witness is not credible at all, he went online & then kept changing his story - eyewitness accounts are notoriously known for being incorrect, especially in an extremely stressful, shocking crime happening in split seconds and then he ducked down behind his dash, etc.
Dateline, please urge the Utah Police Department or FBI if needed, to get involved and investigate this case further. I'm not accusing law enforcement of any wrongdoing, however, it appears that too much evidence has been overlooked, not looked at at all, and that a suspect and conclusion were found, tried and convicted with tunnel vision. I watch your show every week, sometimes 2 - 3 times a week, and this is the first time I've ever gotten involved like this. Justice absolutely needs to happen for Ken and his family - let's make sure that real justice prevails!
The voice on the voicemail was not Chris' voice! Good grief what kind of amateurs investigated the case. It was so neatly set for Chis to take the fall.
Definite the voices are not the same -- tone, inflection, accents. Why did Wright's defense attorney not have voice analysis performed on the recording as part of his client's defense? It would seem his attorney was negligent, or not well-versed in defending clients on murder charges. Unbelievable, that a person is in prison when so much was brought in question regarding his wife alibing him, and witnesses that his Springfield 9 mm was lost months prior to -- and Casey Anthony was acquitted with so much evidence against. It seems the justice system, and jurors' decisions based on reasonable doubt, seem to vary state by state, city by city. Sad!
His voice on the phone during the interview did NOT sound like the voice on the voice mail!
That was not him on the voice mail. Anyone that would really listen to the tape and Chris on the phone could tell that was not him. The voice on the voice mail is much deeper. Chris is innocent. Novak will get what he deserves.
I dont believe that the voicemail is Chris's. It DOESNT sound anything like him!!!
The witness is ridiculous! He checked Chris out online (after he was arrested) and his description became more clear . . . He also said the shooter took the gun out with his right hand. Chris is left handed. Chris sounds nothing like "Robert" on the voice mail. The other guy interviewed sounded more like "Robert" and looked a lot like Chris - did they check his fingerprints and alibi? I don't think Chris had a motive either. Ken was about to help him, wasn't he? Hope I never have to be in Utah when something goes sideways . . . they might try to pin it on me!
I got the feeling the "witness" was a set-up. Paid to be there and pin it on Chris! I'm still upset over this travesty and I hope the Innocence Project takes it on. Slimy police, slimy prosecutors. Discusting!
I watch this show all of the time and it is not often that I am shocked like I was with that outcome. It was clearly not the same voice at all. I really feel sorry for the man sitting in prison for something that he didn't do. I hope they are still investigating the other person. I noticed the tram in the background giving his location even though the city was not named.
That phoney voice mail on the victim's cell phone would have had a traceable number like any cell phone. See if it came from Chris' phone. If not, what number did it come from? Also, check Chris' cell to see if he ever made the call to the victims phone. That info can be easily gotten from the phone company. I never heard that mentioned in the report.
they did trace the voice mail - it came from the prepaid cell phone, that chris bought, but says he gave to Dave Novak.
In this case you have to follow the money. Q. Who had a strong monetary motivation to see Doleczar dead?
A. His stepkids seeing as he was spending their inheiritance while their mom was in Jail.
What would cause a man with no record like Wright to kill Doleczar? Lots of money.
Who had lots of money? The stepkids.
Who connects the stepkid's money to Wright? Novak.
But seeing as Novak is missing the only one the police have leverage over is Wright. The police must offer Wright a deal to testify against the stepkid(s).
All this depends on the deal Wright had with Novak. Did he a)get the money upfront and b)know where the money was coming from? If was smart he did both. If he was stupid and killed Dolczar on the simple promise of payment later from Novak then he deserves to rot in Jail for life. On the other hand if his wife is holding the cash and hoping he gets out on appeal later then perhaps he will be open to a deal after any appeal is denied.
My gut feeling is Wright had half a brain and wouldn't have agreed to kill Doleczar without a substantial upfront payment from the Novak. As to whether he knew the ultimate source of the money, maybe not.
I grew up in Sandy, Utah. Sandy is normally a peaceful, quiet suburb. It is a place you would want to raise a family. I have a few comments about law enforcement in Utah versus other places. I've traveled extensively and lived in some big cities. In Miami, you can't get the cops to respond unless someone is about to shoot you (no joke!). In Las Vegas you can commit minor traffic infractions without much worry because they have much bigger fish to fry. In Utah we don't have enough problems so law enforcement has to zealously respond to minor ones. That's why you can see the reaction when a murder investigation--something major-- occurs.
People are wrongfully imprisoned all the time. Don't think this just happens in Utah. I don't believe the Sandy police set out to frame Chris. If we believe the cloak and dagger plot the only thing the Sandy Police did was plant a shell casing. If we accept the planted shell casing hypothesis, it was just corroborating evidence to the surveillance video, the eye witness, the DNA, etc. If I were a juror I would ignore the shell casing because it doesn't make any sense that it would be brought back to the apartment! Seriously, who brings a shell casing back, but not the gun?? In fact, the shell casing's existence makes me believe it was planted because there was no reason for it to be there. A gun expert may claim it was there as part of a test firing by the manufacturer. If he fired the gun, I think he would have disposed of the casings. As I said, it really doesn't matter though.
I am highly disappointed in Dateline's story. Dateline could have and most definitely should have conducted its own voice analysis. Next, Dateline should have fully investigated Chris's defense. Let's assume the shell casing was planted. Why didn't Dateline more fully investigate the supposed DNA of the mystery sample? Was it Novak? Why didn't Dateline test it? This story should have tried to poke more holes in the prosecution. It was trying to be neutral. It was trying to give equal weight to both sides of the story. A criminal prosecution is NOT a preponderance of the evidence! It is beyond all reasonable doubt. This story should have shown the cloak and dagger scenario could have happened.
The truth, many times, is not black or white. It's somewhere in the middle. The evidence is just too much for Wright to claim he knows nothing about what happened. I just read through every news article on this story. Parts of Wright's story seem suspect to me. I believe he knows more than he is revealing, but I also think there is reasonable doubt.
I feel something else was going on that hasn't been revealed. If I were on the jury I would have said, "I can't convict this man until I see a forensic voice analysis of the recording and I see a DNA report for the mystery DNA sample. I have reasonable doubt until my questions are satisfied."
THe problem with a criminal trial is that it's not interactive with a jury. It's presented evidence only. A grand jury gets to ask questions while a trial jury does not. I think that's not a good system. Juries should be able to ask questions and demand answers. They should be able to ask for a forensic voice analysis and for the mystery DNA to be identified.
The police needed to offer Wright a plea deal to talk. Give us Novak and/or the stepkids and you are out in 10. Perhaps they did offer such a deal and Wright turned it down. And perhaps Novak is not currently among the living and Wright fears for his wife's future safety.
Dateline reports the story, it does not do its own investigations to clear (or convict) the accused. It presents the story so we can make up our minds whether the person is guilty or innocent, whether we agree with the outcome or don't agree with it. It takes no stand on the gult of innocence of the subject.
I have looked at some of the stories about the case in the local press. In one story, there seems to be reference to Novak investing in Wright's business shortly after the murder. I do not know if this is true but if it is it certainly suggests a line of inquiry. I found Wright's wife very credible but there seem to be a number of pieces of evidence pointing in his direction. The whole thing with the lost gun, shell casing sounds suspicious - I doubt that the police would plant the casing and, if not, then the "lost" gun is the murder weapon which is too much of a coincidence. But maybe Novak planted the shell casing. I guess Novak lives in Portland Oregon based on the bus that passed in the background during the video of Novak. There also is a weird blog that talks about some hockey team that the victim was involved in and implies that the folks who coached it were investigated and dismissed from their jobs. A very strange case - I am haunted by Wright's wife - she seems very credible but maybe that's because she is English.
Definitely does NOT sound like Chris at all!!!
BUT, could it be possible that a voice changer has been used?
What about the people who worked that day at the cellphone store, did they get a chance to see the "real" Chris, to compare if that one on the surveillance video could only be a look-alike?
And for Chris to supposedly put on a wig, meet the victim, and NOT be recognized so he could pull the trigger?? Come on!!!
A voice changer can affect the sound, but a voiceprint would be the same regardless. A voice print was not done by the prosecution. If they thought it was his voice, they should have proved it with a voice print. They didn't, and that should have created reasonable doubt in the minds of the jury.
The defense answers to the prosecutions arguments. If the prosecution did not bring up the subject of whose voice was on the phone, (or any other issue) the defense cannot address the issue. If the prosecution produces a voiceprint and says it belongs to Chris, then the defense can introduce its own expert to examine the voiceprint and testify that it is not. If the prosecution was sure of Chris' guilt and thought a voiceprint would prove otherwise, there would be no voiceprint made.
The voice on the message does not sound anything like Chris Wright. And that eyewitness seems like a total kook. I cannot believe the case even went to trial, let alone that it got a conviction. Justice was definitely not served.
Portland, Or. needs to keep a watch for David Novak, consultant to the convicted. How ironic!
That "certain NW city" Dateline refers to at the end is most definitely Portland, OR. The Starbucks David and Erin are filmed walking out of is on the corner of 12th and Lovejoy in the Pearl District. I've seen him a hundred times. He wears shorts 365 days a year.
The voice on the recording did not sound anything like the voice of Chris. The phone voice recording and the voices of both Novak and Chris need to be subjected to forensic analysis. This should be an ongoing investigation.

I believe the evidence just is not there to convict Chris Wright of murder. Even the witness had a changing description. It's pretty scary to have a jury listen to what we just listened to and come up with a totally opposite conclusion! I hope this man has people who will come along side and help him out in this unjust conviction! Life is short enough without sitting in prison being wrongfully convicted!
I don't know who is guilty first and foremost and it is a shame so many folks here feel the KNOW Chris is innocent because of an hour long Dateline show. Do you really think in a 60 minute commercial laden show you got all the facts of the case to KNOW who did and did not do what? Please... grow up already.
My guess is Chris killed Ken after being hired by Novak. Did I miss something from the show or did some of you? I thought Dateline said the manufacture of the gun or bullets fired a bullet from the lot and they used that bullet to analyze it from a shell at the crime scene and they matched the shells, unspent shells found in the gun case.
The VM did not sound like Chris no question however this does not mean Chris did not alter his voice on the call.. ever think of that? Geeze..so many Sheeple around here. It is also possible his lawyers did not analyze the voices because he felt they would have matched. That makes more sense than to save a few grand and risking prison time for his client.
Lost a gun.. hard to believe that one. Maybe he is innocent but not likely and certainly Dateline did not show enough to make anything clear to anyone and if you believe otherwise you are a true Sheeple and have zero ability at critical thinking and you should never ever vote.
The gun was lost. There was no gun to fire a sample from. The police are saying there was a sample casing in the gun case, which the wife disputes.
