Dec. 2: Robyn Gardner missing in Aruba

New York, NY — December 2, 2011

Just 24 hours after his return from Aruba, where he was held for four months on suspicion of murdering Robyn Gardner, suspect Gary Giordano sat down with “Dateline’s” Josh Mankiewicz for an in-depth interview. Giordano claims innocence, yet many still believe he is responsible for Gardner’s death. The story, which reveals new details that are exclusive to "Dateline," will be reported by Mankiewicz and will air tonight at 10p/9c.

Regarding when Giordano went searching for help:

Josh Mankiewicz:
This is something I know you heard before. On the security tape, showing you - after Robyn disappeared, at a time when you say you're lookin' for help, you're bangin' on the door there. You don't look frantic. You don't look concerned. Were you?

Gary Giordano:
Yes, very much so.

Josh Mankiewicz:
'Cause it seems more sort of casual that you're bangin' on the wall there.

Gary Giodano:
I was - it's hard to pick up on a tape - that I was exhausted, scared, and shocked that there was nobody there. There was nobody to jump up and down and say, "Come help me."

Josh Mankiewicz:
So that's you looking exhausted, scared, and shocked?

Gary Giordano:
Yeah. You don't know me.

+++++++++++++++

Regarding the last time Giordano saw Gardner - A "Dateline" exclusive:

Gary Giordano:
We drifted out. And then I noticed that the - we were getting in deeper water. So I reached out to grab her leg, pulled her leg to signal going in. And as I turned, my shoes had become extremely heavy, 'cause we were being pushed out by the wind and some current. And now I was struggling. So that's the last time I saw her. That's the last image I have of her.

Josh Mankiewicz:
You - at one point told police that the water was rough.

Gary Giordano:
It was - and I told them that it - at a certain point, I was struggling to get back. So you can determine what rough is, you know? There wasn't a tidal wave coming at me, but I was struggling - at one point realized this is - there's a problem here.

+++++++++++++++

Regarding the travel insurance policy taken out on Gardner:

Josh Mankiewicz:
Now that your incarceration's over, do you expect to get that money?

Gary Giordano:
I haven't given that - that - that's in - I haven't given that a thought - I haven't given that a positive thought.

Josh Mankiewicz:
Which means what?

Gary Giordano:
Whenever I think about that, it's dirty. As you pointed out, I would not have been arrested and detained in four - you know, four months in a prison with murderers, if, in fact, I didn't have that insurance. So to me, it was - it stole four months out of my life.

Funny how the victims in Baez's defense cases all seem to drown.

If Giordano did not kill Robyn to profit from her death, let's see him not collect the $1.5mm insurance claim. If he does, it is confirmed for me that he killed her. His explanation of their relationship is that they weren't in a serious relationship - if this is the case, why does he think he deserves this payout? Her family, even her boyfriend, would be more appropriate beneficiaries - someone who was at least meaningful to her life.

Not saying he's innocent at all but why does collecting $1.5 million confirm to you he murdered her? He's legally entitled to the money. You sound like one of the people who want to convict Joe Paterno! Do you think by the way his legal team is doing this for free? He'll probably use the money from the insurance to pay them. It is not his responsibility to get himself convicted, sorry.

My friend who wears hair pieces, says that Giordano was wearing a hair piece ; when he says they were snorkeling.

He is shown seeking help while the hair piece is in place.

Not sure if we have missed this info or if it may help!!!!!

You do not wear a hair piece in the water!!!

That's not true at all. I used to have hair club for men hairpieces and you did not have to take them off for swimming. It clearly did look like he was wearing a hairpiece for the interview. Without looking at the footage again I couldn't tell you if he was wearing a hairpiece then but your argument doesn't hold. Yeah I think he probably did it but the hairpiece deal doesn't hold water!

Where are his wet footprints while pounding on doors if his shoes were so saturated he had to leave her to go to shore?

You are so right on this sluth. Where were Robyn's shoes; 4: wedges? Did they float out to sea?

Sorry if this is a repeat, my comment didn't show up after I registered so I'm doing it again...

This says it all for me....

Me: Ummm. How about the fact that she had to die for you to get that money??

He only seemed concerned that the insurance is what caused him to lose 4 months of his life. Is it just me or does anyone else think that it says a lot? If someone I cared about died and I might get money because of their death, THAT is what I think would make it feel "dirty" (as he called it). But he didn't mention that at all!

Who says he cared about her? Sounds like he just wanted to have sex with her. If I were her boyfriend, I think he's brokenhearted about someone who really didn't exist and he got played by her.

Has he taken a lie detector? Also, If you are snorkeling with a loved one or friend and the seas started to get rough....you would not simply tap that person on the leg and start swimming to shore. You would stay with that person to help each other and be sure you both made it to shore safely!!! I don't understand how he could get all the way to shore before realizing she wasn't there! Didn't he ever once look back to check on her (if he so selfishly just left her and started swimming without her)? Nothing makes sense!

....and why did he have "juice" in his car?? I guess they could"ve had a cooler packed with food and drink for the day.....but why then stop to eat and drink at all if you had food and drink in a cooler? And he supposedly has so much money. Just doesn't strike me as a man who would pack a cooler to save some money or something. That seems odd as well.

If others were at the beach, as Giordano claims, why did he have to go look for help? Had everyone left the beach? And if they had, why did he go to the bar (or whatever that place was where he was knocking on the walls) instead of the snorkeling shop that was 100 yards away? He also conveniently couldn't remember what he said to the worker at the airport about why his companion was not with him on the return trip yet he could remember all the details of her disappearance. Did the authorities ever locate and question the couple that Giordano claims he asked what beach to go to that day?

                            Reply#10 - Sat Dec 3, 2011 12:49 AM EST

                            1. Did cops interview or see on video the supposed couple who sat beside them on beach like he said and ask about that snorkeling beach?

                            2. Does previous video in the hotel show him looking around and up at the placement of cameras; he glanced briefly at one after rapping on doors and left in a strange hurry IF he wanted help. No one jumps up and opens the door to their room that fast.

3.) Insurance: In Canada at least money goes to the estate, or you must prove an "insurable interest" such as spouse, business partner, etc., for any amount of insurance; someone you are tied to. What did he state on the form? And how did he pay for the insurance, cash or cc? And calling the insurer 2 days b4 the trip to ask about how to claim life insurance? It's just not done and should not have crossed his mind. I tend to think if he does claim that "dirty" money, it is a smoking gun so-to-speak.

4.) driving an extra hour to a very unlikely snorkel beach like that? Maybe he just wanted to ensure the scene was "hard" to describe and random. Again, the couple they talked to? Also was that beach out of plain sight of parasail operators and normal beach patrol aircraft that regularly flies up and down busy areas to watch for anything unusual?

5.) in calm water a man his size grabbed her leg and then she disappeared?? One of two things happened. She did not go missing there, or someone else was waiting in the water and drowned her, pulling her out to sea. Unless its a shark infested spot, bodies always wash up on shore.

6.) saying she's taking a later flight is a huge red flag. Did the counter agent check to see which flight she was supposedly booked on, just even out of curiosity and service? Did he even ask, "oh, btw, what time does that flt get into xx?"

                            7. did he leave without telling the hotel front desk her stuff was still in the room?

                            8. when she wrote "this sucks" and I'll explain everything when I get home at 2:05am, was she in the room or at the hotel pc rentals?

                            9. WHY in the world would she hide the fact she often chatted with a "GAY" friend online? I don't know a guy on earth who care about the gay male friend most women have anyway. She would have talked about the funny conversations and so on.

                            10. Is he known as a straight-faced liar/joker/tease whatever?

11.) Who offered them the life insurance? A travel agent or website?

                            12. Did staff at hotel or restaurant see him having what might look like an unusual chat with someone, such as a non-guest or a guy sitting alone?

                              Reply#11 - Sat Dec 3, 2011 12:56 AM EST

Did she email or FB anyone else since they got to aruba? Being in the airline business, I know that changing destinations from fla to aruba instead requires a trail of info that takes some time and explains detailed info and fees whether or not it was the same airline all the way enroute. It's entered on whats called the SSR fields. Did they even stop and change planes in FLA? Going to Netherlands territory from USA is not just a a shrug and "Ok let's do that." If they did stop in FLA what connecting time did they have and is there video? Does the DHS have a record of all this?

Aruba seems to be a red herring here, with his excuse about natalie holloway?

Was the rental car "spotless" when returned? washed, vacuumed, interior wiped down?

His demeanor back at the hotel appeared unreasonably calm. Sure I would grab drinks at the bar out of sheer attack of nerves but I would tell everyone in sight that I needed URGENT help with a search, like a small plane or helicopter to fly around that snorkel area. I would be inconsolable and not rapping on doors. His behaviour at that point should have been FRANTIC, not walking around hoping some strangers would come out and instantly believe he needed help. None of it adds up. BUT, there is no body. habeas corpus.

                              So many questions

He doesn't have to have a defense as he states No crime has been committed and there is no evidence of a crime being committed or he would have been charged. Dateline and Josh Mankawitz as well as Baez the lawyer all blew it by asking the Prosecuter Guy would he have brought Giodarno to trial based on the existing evidence? Chances are he would have said no.

I'm guessing the guy did it in a fit of rage because she didn't have sex with him but they don't have anything good enough to bring him to trial.

It'd be great if whoever's responsible for the website would let viewers know if the show is going to be uploaded. For quite some time now, uploading is delayed for days after the show, and even viewers who admire the reporting enough to check back are discouraged and give up on the program altogether. But it's worse when the show is never put up at all and those responsible don't take the time to state outright that copyright problems will prohibit it's being available here.

Is there human trafficking going on in Aruba? Both Natalie Halloway and Robyn Gardner have never been found. Perhaps both of these men involved in their disappearances cashed in on this?

They neglected to bring out in this report that as an experienced traveler, Gary always takes out traverler's insurance, in case some expensive misfortune should occur. Gary and Mr. Baez both advised another interviewer that Gary's Aruban attorney advised him to call and check on the insurance rules right away because he may have to pay for all the costs of the search effort. Seems perfectly logical. Also, it was brought out that his Aruban attorney wanted him to sign over a portion of the insurance to him to pay for his legal fees. I certainly hope the truth is proven in this case.

My guess is Robyn Gardner is alive and well and either in hiding or she's changed her identity and appearance. She and Giordano planned this "accident" with the intention of splitting a 1.5 million dollar life insurance claim. It's been done before. Gardner and Giordano look like cheap hustlers. If I had the chore of investigating this woman's "disappearance," I'd keep her family and friends (if she has any) under a microscope--phone calls, emails, etc.--and also alert tattoo parlors to be on the look out for this slut. My bet is within a year Gardner will "reappear." Aw, who knows, maybe she'll claim she hit her head on a rock and had "amnesia"!

Throw both of 'em in the slammer for insurance fraud and forget about 'em. And, for godsakes, no profitting from any "tell all" books and no more interviews w/ Giordano and that scumbag Baez. Maybe Giordano will invite Baez and his bitch Casey Anthony to go snorkeling. I would like to suggest they all go down to the Great Barrier Reef off of Australia and dive in and pet the Great White sharks. Sharks'll eat any damn thing.

If he was snokeling with his shoes on, why didn't his shoes appear wet or leave wet footprints on the concrete? I've gotten my shoes wet at the beach and sloshed around for hours; that time of day, his shoes would not have dried off so fast. I don't believe that she ever went into th water. Robyn was wearing "high wedges"; were her shoes found? I really doubt that Robyn would go into the water with 4" wedges on. Where was her dress; did she go snorkeling in that dress? If she is dead, by now her remains will have skeletonized. They have a zillion crabs on that island and crabs will feed on dead flesh. Just some thoughts.

                                                  1. Giordano gives himself away. He's trying to give the impression that he cares, but he doesn't. If water is rough, you don't just tap somebody's leg and swim away without looking back. You don't just bang on doors and walk away. You don't say the money is dirty because it took 4 months of your life away from you when the other person is dead!?!?! Giordano doesn't even know how to give the impression that he cares about anybody except his own freedom and his own children. In his interview with Mankiewicz, he goes to the extreme in his attitude and his lies to deny everything (who cares if you had alcohol in your cup - no need to say "juice"!). He reeks of guilt.

                                                  2. Jose Baez takes a poor stance by claiming "Giodarno is innocent," as if Baez actually knows. All Baez knows is that there isn't enough evidence to show a crime (and that is his defense to the LA prosecutor). To go beyond the valid "lack of evidence" argument and to say your client is entirely innocent without any proof of it is wrong. Baez just oozes sleaze when he doesn't have to.
