Feb. 6: The true story of Aron Ralston

The story of Aron Ralston -- the climber who freed himself from a crushing boulder in Blue John Canyon, Utah --  stunned the world and inspired the Oscar-nominated film 127 Hours starring James Franco.  Nearly eight years later, Ralston speaks with NBC News' Tom Brokaw about his new life as a father and husband and the lessons learned in between.

Watch a web exclusive interview with actor James Franco below:

Aron Ralston's ordeal made headlines back in 2003.  James Franco describes how he learned the full story behind Ralston's survival and what made him decide to play the hiker in '127 Hours'. (Courtesy: Fox Searchlight Pictures)

Great episode. Watched it with my neighbors. We wondered what happened to Brooke's Dad? What other programs has Kate Snow done? She looks familiar....

Great episode Tom!! I saw the movie the night before seeing the dateline story. It was a great follow up. So happy for Aron and his growth. Thanks for the story. Like aron, I was also influenced by the book 'Into the Wild'.

Great piece. Speaking as a stroke survivor, suffered a cerebellar stroke on 5 May 2007. The piece about Aron and his struggles various and ultimate triumph over adversity, over the seemingly insurmountable odd's of his own demise was most inspirational, endearing, as well as, motivational. Makes one truly believe (makes me believe that full recovery from the deficits caused by the occurence of stroke, while tedious and long are in fact possible. I shall read Aron's Ralston's account of his ordeal in his book first, and thereafter I shall see the film 127 Hours starring James Franco, in the role of Aron Ralston, a genuine survivor.

Many thanks to Dateline for tackeling such an in-depth and undoutably a very difficult subject.

        Respectfully, DJ Turdo

I watched the program about Aron and his journey through Blue John Canyon. However, our crummy El Paso, TX NBC station interrupted the end of the program when Brokow was interviewing Aron with an ad about their great and wonderful coverage of local events. I am very sad I was unable to see the end of the program and hear what Aron had started to relay about his reactions to the whole episode. I hoped to find it on the website but there is nothing yet. Dateline stretches every episode out to ultimate tedium but I suffered through it this time because of the subject matter. Too bad I didn't get to see the conclusion. Hate EL Paso TV and wish Las Cruces had a TV station.

Ditto. I recorded the show on my DVR and the recording ended before the conclusion. I have been searching for this episode online to no avail. Please Dateline NBC, I need closure!!!
