Jan. 23: Who are the latest newsmakers?

This Sunday at 7pm/6c, Dateline delivers exclusive updates on the latest newsmakers:

For decades he's been one of Hollywood's most coveted leading men. Now, it seems his -own- story just might have a Hollywood ending. The news was alarming five months ago, when actor Michael Douglas announced he'd been diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer. But this month, he announced that he's tumor-free. In his first in-depth interview since his treatment, he shares the latest with Matt Lauer -- on his battle, and his blessings.

Also:  As Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and others injured in the Tucson, Arizona attack recuperate, there is one wound from that day which may take longer to heal than any other.  Brian Williams sits down with Tucson shooting victim Suzi Hileman, the woman who brought 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green to meet Congresswoman Giffords.

Plus: The planes roared out over the desert before dawn 20 years ago this week. The U.S.-led assault in the first Gulf War launched the drive to liberate Kuwait from the invading forces of Iraq's Saddam Hussein. To mark the anniversary, Brian Williams also sits downs for an exclusive interview with former president George H.W. Bush, and a rare gathering of the team that made the historic decisions of Operation Desert Storm.

And:  She appeared poised, lively, and prepared to step into her new role-- wife of the future King of England. Reaction to Kate Middleton and Prince William's engagement announcement has been overwhelmingly positive, even in the often-critical British press. Now, though, the tone of the tabloid scrutiny is changing -- the sniping has started. Kate Snow brings us the latest on the Royal Wedding.

Join us Sunday at 7pm/6c Central for a new Dateline report.

Discuss this post

Why was it necessary to show--and to hold the camera on--the woman who took the child to meet Giffords when she broke down? To show such a private and potentially embarrassing moment shows disrespect for her. It was clear from what she said that she was upset.

Viewing a brief excerpt of the roundtable discussion with former President Bush and his cabinet members, my reaction to the former President's answer to Brian Williams question about his feelings about the casualties suffered in the 2nd Gulf War left me speechless, and full of anger and disappointment in our former leader. His reply that he is not worrying about the dead and wounded anymore; he leaves it to others now. Perhaps he looks at the big picture and doesn't see the individuals who sacrifice their lives everyday as anything but duty; tell the survivors of our dead soldiers, civilians and others who didn't ask for war that you don't worry about it anymore... How in God's name could he minimize the lives of our soldiers and innocent who sacrifice their lives day in and day out that he doesn't worry about it anymore...how indifferent, how uncaring can one be...how elitist. Sorry I voted for him...his true color has come through. I guess by detaching himself emotionally he can live with his decisions. My prayers are with him.

In the entire interview, the "oil" was never uttered. How can a respected journalist not even suggest that the reason the US was even interested in the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait was because of oil. Brian Williams' interview with the President GHW Bush was a puff piece.

i too am a cancer survivor. i was diagnosed 3/19/08, with stage 4 cancer of my voicebox. i underwent a total laryngectomy(removal of voicebox). i also had 38 radiation treatments and 6 wks. of chemo. i also had to have a permanent tracheotomy, which is my only airway. i was cut from ear to ear, 58 staples, 26 stitches in my neck. the radiation ruined the part of my thyroid they didn;t have to removed, causing a 60# weight gain. i also had 2-3months of going to hospitals and doctors, before going to a e.n.t, and allowing him 5min. to put a camera down my throat, he knew right then, it was stage 4, and very close to blocking my airway. after intitial surgery to place trach, i did all my communicating with gestures and notes. they removed my left forearm, down to the bone to actually build me a throat. i remain cancer free at this time but have had a few scares! i feel great, except for the weight gain, and some depression. i had been a nurse for 16yrs. taking care of the elderly. several months prior to cancer i had been in a mva, and was awaiting on social security disability. i too now have a deeper appreciation for friends and family. i posted several pics on my space website to discourage people from smoking.it is a public profile. the url is myspace.com/sharpeg22. all lower case letters. however with someone as famous as michael douglas having oral cancer, maybe it will help to raise awareness! there are always fundraiers for breast cancer and never any for oral cancers, which is actually on the rise in women as well as men. i hope anyone that takes the time to read this will also visit my website on myspace and see close up what you look like!! even with some of the swelling, pain and weight gain, i feel truly blessed for everyday i have!! my prayers are with michael douglas and his wonderful family!!

the woman who brought christina to the event is devastated. in hindsight i would never let my young child attend such an event given the tone of the nation so far. she could have submitted the questions some other way by writing them down. i understand the young woman was active in her class government but not appropriate for this event. the family is grieving. the nation is grieving. we must keep our children safe and let them be children. there is no malice intended here.

It's too bad that there was no mention of the service members who served during "Gulf War 1". It's no wonder why they feel like they have been forgotten ..... They have not forgotten, many continue to suffer with so far "undiagnosed" medical and mental health issues. I for one have not forgotten, I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when Operation Desert Shield turned into Operation Desert Storm. Those soldiers still have the images of the retreating enemy etched in their memories. Fortunately there were few casualties ..... unfortunately, many of the unrecognized casualties still continue to be dismissed by our Congress and the Department of Veterans Affairs. History has a way of repeating itself. One would have thought we would have learned after Vietnam ..... my hope is that the veterans of this Gulf War II (?) not be forgotten in the same way.

Nice political commentary...you would think that if you didn't know that George W. Bush was the 43rd President NOT the "44th" President you wouldn't mention it.  You would think the editors would catch something so obvious.  My 13yr old son, Mitch, caught it right away.  If you can't tell the truth about our history, don't even bother telling it at all.
