I am watching Dateline right now regarding the hungry in Ohio. I could not help but notice one of the "hungry" persons named Anita is sporting a beautiful pink French Manicure!!!! Her and others like her have some nerve to go on national TV crying about how hard life is and the inability to properly feed thier children when I know that a manicure like that costs a minimum of $40 anywhere in the country. That money would be better spent on food for her children rather than depending on a food pantry that is struggling to feed the really needy. I don't believe for one moment that a "friend or relative" gave her a manicure either. Anita should get her priorities straight and she should be embarassed for appearing on Dateline with her tale of woe when their are so many who actually need and appreciate help.
I can't beleive that you are focusing on the manicure. You know that when you are depressed you need to do something to make you happy. I do not fault her for getting the manicure. I fault you for noticing and passing judgement for them. How bad must your life be to sit here and write a comment about that? May GOD be with all the poor in this country and I pray they never met people like you.
I, too, agree about the manicure and the gold chain and saw something else. One of the mothers was SMOKING. Couldn't the cost of a pack of cigarettes bought food for the kids? Come on.....priorities?
As I sat and watched this show tonight I was moved at first thinking these are people in America. They shouldn't be hungry! But then at the end of the show one girl who is so poor and can't feed her children was SMOKING!!!!! I don't smoke but I know how expensive cigarettes are! Also, why do you keep having children when you can't feed yourself much less your kids!!! This show just angered me to high heavens!!!!!!!!!!! Way to go NBC and another bleeding heart liberal show that you always produce!!!!!!!!
Frankly, I am getting sick and tired of seeing stories of "supposedly" poor families in need, however, it seems that a lot of their woes was brought on by bad judgement and decisions. I grew up without parents and raised by a grandmother, who despite, rain, snow, sleet or hail went out every morning to her job of 35 years cleaning houses to put food on the table for myself and my two sisters.
I had to drop out of college to take care of the cancer that took her life some years later....However, instead of having babies I couldn't afford or make excuses, I worked two jobs, went to school full-time and went back to and finished with a college degree.
Of course we are living in unprecedented economically trying times and hard decisions have to be made in not only the job sector and budget sectors but, also in an individuals personal decisions - such as, unlike Anita in your story, CONTINUE TO HAVE BABIES THAT THEY CAN'T AFFORD!!....AND WHO PAYS FOR THEIR HOUSING SUBSIDIES, FOOD STAMPS, MEDICAID FOR THEIR CHILDREN, ETC - IT IS WE, THE HARD-WORKING AMERICAN TAXPAYER, WHO DID NOT KEEP HAVING KIDS THEY SIMPLY CAN'T AFFORD!!!
Amazing, "Anita' had one child and, despite how hard life became, HAD ANOTHER ONE THAT SHE CALLED A "MISTAKE"...."THINGS HAPPEN" SHE SAID!!..........ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!.....YET, SHE WANTED TO BE A SINGER!.........GIVE ME A BREAK!!
Dateline should have focused on the resources that SELFISH individuals such as Anita and her decisions to "keep having babies", use and multiply that by the millions of children born to irresponsible individuals who makes a hardship even harder - THAT IS "THEIR" decisions to keep having babies and as a law-abiding, tax-paying, responsible voting American - I AM SICK OF WELFARE, I AM SICK OF SELFISH INDIVIDUALS SCAMMING THE SYSTEM AND I AM TIRED OF PEOPLE, WHO KEEP HAVING BABIES THAT THEY CANNOT AFFORD!!!!......IT IS THE CHILDREN, TAXPAYERS AND THE SYSTEM ITSELF THAT SUFFERS!
A little self esteem in a human beings life, be it a manicure or a kind word from a stranger (AHEM MIMI) can go a looooong way!!! and you stand corrected...I live in southern Ohio and often times what appears to be a "beautiful pink french manicure" can be attained from a $5 pack of press on nails. Sometimes a woman ,no matter what her circumstance, wants to feel like a woman, especially in front of the eyes of a judgemental television audience. Remember the statement" But for the grace of God go I." I hope you never find yourself in a similar situation. I am saddened that all you got out of a heart wrenching and truth telling piece was the shape of a down trodden womans nails. you would be better served to grab your card out of your wallet and make a donation and help those that you call truly in need rather than blast someone via an ill thought out comment. May God bless you and hopefully you will sit with your judgement and re-think a hasty comment. To judge is easy to make a difference....DIVINE!!!
There is a part of my heart for people that are poor. I have a daughter that is struggling, BUT, on dateline tonight I need someone to explaine, the manicure, the gold necklance, the flat screen tv and the cigarettes. WTH. I am not wealthy by any means, but if I needed a gallon of milk or a pack of cigarettes i know what i would choose. Thank you
S. Akins - I couldn't agree with you more. Some people posting on here are just rude. I grew up in Northeast Ohio, which is a little better off than Southern Ohio. I moved away when I graduated from college because there are no jobs there, but Ohio will always be home. I am glad this story was done, because there are plenty of poor people all over the United States who need our help, not just Ohio. People need to walk a mile in others shoes before being so nasty.
I was one of those poor struggling moms, and to make myself better I bought (at the dollar store), stick on/glue on fingernails for $1.00, that were a "french manicure", and you could also buy them "air brushed" for $1.00, so don't be so quick to judge someone by looking at their nails!! (Besides, I'm sure her nails were bitten down to the quick, and she needed whatever she could get to help her raise her self esteem. Shame on you!
I also watched the show. I also noticed the man with the gold chain around his neck, that would bring in a few hundred dollars right now. I noticed all of these things but, it's about the children, and the many shown who were really doing the best they can. Jobs left America years ago, and they continue to do so. Basic civics taught me that the economy works by having a job, then spending your money on what you need. Not by manipulation of interest rates, not by bailing out banks who are still hounding the people who owe them when they weren't the ones bailed out. We need our jobs to come back, that hasn't happened. Bring our jobs back, practice charity. Bottom line is that there are hundreds more cities like that in America. The children suffer. If everone would send $1 to their local food banks for each person in their household and, if you can afford it, another dollar to your local ASPCA, it would make a world of difference. Be part of the solution. In the meantime I pray that jobs come back so people can work, and make our economy work the way it is supposed to. Make a difference, not a judgement. Mr. Zimmerman please hang in there, you are not alone. Your children would never be able to accept that. God Bless you all.
By the way...just wondering here....How do any of you know that chain was real? My God, a chain of cheap brass can be bought anywhere for less than $10!!! could be a family heirloom, could of had it since high school, sheesh anything....... Again soooooooo easy to judge but until you are in a similar situation I wonder why you are sitting on your computer being such harsh judges???? I do agree with the smoking. As someone in the health industry it is worrisome seeing someone in such dire straits continuing to cause their body harm. All I can do is hope the woman tries to stop and not judge because we all live in glass houses...I am sure noone on here has EVER done anything they may later regret...you all sound like pillars of moral restraint! PROVIDE HELP & STOP JUDGING!!!!!!
I too looked at the lady with the cigarette in her hand...? how does she afford her cigarettes? But then I thougtht, don't judge her, remember, there but for the grace of God go I. I am on disability because I had a stroke. I am blessed with a wonderful family and friends who have been there in my time of need. Perhaps these people never had that. If anyone knows what it's like to have to ask for help or a handout, it strips any pride you have!!Any one with pride does not want a HANDOUT, just a HAND UP!!! If you are blessed with a job, home, money or stamps to feed your children, all the necessary things in your life please give thanks. It could all go away tomorrow and you may be on the receiving end........God bless southeastern Ohio and all the people there.
How can donating funds to a food pantry do anything more than provide food? So what will it hurt to dip into our wallets and help buy food? Food helps feed the children. They are the victims in all of this irregardless of the bad choices their parents make. They're not asking us to give cash to a drug addict or alcohoholic. Just money to a food bank for food. So let's not "look around" for a reason to not help the children with what they really need. Food. Our small donations would be well spent I think.
I noticed that one person left a good paying job to take care of her father and yet when her husband found work they moved out what happened to helping her father and she would have been better off keeping her job and supporting her family. Also i noticed she smoked cigarettes cost at least 6.00 or more a pack now days. then the girl that has three children and never married im sorry but there is birth control now days.
I agree with you 100%. People are so quick to judge others. Who gives a damn if the woman has on fake nails! That does not matter, she is truggling to provide for her family. People now a days are so hesitant to help others. What happened to helping those who are less fortunate! I'm emabarassed to hear that some of my fellow Americans are more focused on the " nails" and "chain" rather than the saddness in the children's eyes, the desperation in the parent's voice is and the NEED this community longs for! America is known for lending its hand and giving to others, don't ruin that!
God bless these families! I declare by the power vested in me by God that the community in Ohio will be blessed.
My prayer in Spanish will go a long way! It's easier for me to say it in Spanish than in English- God bless you OHIO and all those families that are in need!
I cannot believe how judgemental people are being. I always try to remember "But for the grace of God go I." When did Americans become so mean spirited? I hope those of you who are judging the people in this story never lose your job or become sick. What would you do?
Seems like a classic case of the just world bias.....blaming the victim to assuage the discomfort we feel ourselves. It is sad that a manicure or gold chain is what you focus on! You could probably get a nail kit at the dollar store! And who knows if the chain is even real and who cares, would you be more comfortable if they were in rags and groveling? Then would they be worthy?
Living in Oklahoma, I've seen starving people. They aren't obsese.
Man I cannot believe the ignorance I am hearing from everyone. We should feel obligated to take care of our people. We have no problems taking care of starving children in other countries, but what about our own, what about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie? Those are the people we should be upset at, they rather take care of starving families elsewhere but here. whether they are smoking cigs or not, isnt it better than having a heroin or coke addiction. Help these people, one day you could be in this position, to me? I see people that need our help badly.
Who made YOU the judge of these people? You obviously have no idea what these people are going through. You lack compassion and love, so if you don't have any money, food or volunteer time to give them, go find something better to do with your time. How do you know that was a real gold chain? How do you know those weren't press on nails. I don't smoke, but if I was going through their hell, I would probably start. For those that do care - let's make a commitment to help these hungry children.
I would like to say that before people send money to Ohio, that they look at their own communities. There are people who are struggling in this economy everywhere. Send the money and donations to your local food pantry and shelters FIRST!
I just finished watching the dateline on the poor people of Ohio. Thank you Ann for bring this story to the attention of us who have plenty. My first impression of those who are so negative towards how the poor are living, nice nails, a good chain, cigarettes, need I go on, is because we as Americans do not want to BELIEVE that is kind of poverty is going on in America and perhaps in our own back yard! We would prefer to think that kind of poverty is only happening in third world countries. I am willing to bet that somewhere close to you is someone who is living just like the people of Ohio, are you going to help them or blame them?
I totally agree with those of you who have said "walk a mile in their shoes," and than the path chosen will still not be the same, because you will bring to the path your own feelings. So the walk will NEVER be the same!
I think that if everyone who watched this show would walk a mile in Mr. Zimmerman's shoes, instead of
focusing on the little things they saw on the show, they would be sending help instead of typing BS
on their laptops. The children did not ask to come into this world, and should not be going hungry.
Our government has allot to do with why are children are going to bed at night with their little bellies growling. If instead of taking care of the rest of the world and the God forsaken amount of money we spend on defending other countries, we spend it on our country. Charity begins at home. Further more I think we can take the money you will spend on Starbucks tomorrow morning and send it to the food pantry in Ohio you might start your day feeling good and not passing such bad judgment on your neighbors.
How about you even just mail your old cloths to the shelter in Ohio, that would be a start.
After watching the show, I was upset about the girl having more children than she can afford and the cigarettes ... then I read a few of these comments and became even more upset. Times are tough people, I agree. Bashing those who appeared on the show because they have a french manicure, more babies than they can afford or a cigarette habit will not help the situation. Southeastern Ohio is a very depressed area, just like many many other depressed areas in America. Rather than being offended by those interviewed, I am more offended by the government sending aid to foreign countries while there are so many in America that need our assistance. I agree that there are other countries in need, but why not start in our own back yard before trying to save the world??
To those who got on here and complained about the show, shame on you! I will keep you all in my prayers, along with all those interviewed. To those who are here to help, THANK YOU!
To Gov. Strickland: I hope that you meant what you said about not making any more cuts to our educational system. Without educational funding, the situation will only deteriorate more. Thank you in advance for not making cuts to education in these already tough economical times.
It makes me very angry with a black president, who you broadcast as Mr. Obama instead of President Obama. NBC and CBS are known for this. Racism in America is still strong. The article you broadcasted on the lady in Ohio with the food pantry the day after she received all kinds of funds, and the poor black fishermen were about to lose everything they had, no one has raised a hand to help. Black and Asian fishermen had to wait for food stamps. Is this just and democratic? I do not think so. Also why every time the little man applies for credit whether you get it or not it stays on your credit report for 10 years. It's just another way of holding people of color down.
Looks kind of funny that the lady living in the trailer has a live-in boyfriend with a big beer belly who does not work but has what looks like a $400 gold chain around his neck. Do they have cell phones also and cable or dish TV?
It is people like you why the country is getting worse and it seems hopeless. Even when the truth, about the difficulties of the times, is hitting most people you are in denial. How can you watch this program and your conclusion is shrouded in ideology. I guess you are also a christian who proudly wears it as a badge to convince yourself and others you are a good person.
When the election was about to occur in 2008 some were saying the economy is strong and deficits do not matter. It was only when the country started losing 750 000 jobs in one month that the rhetoric changed. Intelligent people learn from the mistakes of others and the stupid ONLY learns through personal experiences. I guess there is only a problem when it comes knocking on your front door.
I remember Dick Cheney who held onto his conservative views about gay marriage until his daughter came out. Some of us recognise that the only way to prove some people wrong is to let the entire country fall apart; even then they will blame everyone else.
moron
Apparently Thomas has some sort of amazing eye for gold that he can tell exactly how much it costs from barely seeing a damn necklace on a tv screen. Get a life, buddy. It doesn't matter whether the necklace was real gold or not.
Oh David Zimmerman, please let me tell you that you are not alone in thinking that your death would be a better answer than what you're family is going through now. I too have those fleeting thoughts. The show has not yet ended, but I felt I needed to tell you that you are not alone, and our kids need us more that food or clothing will ever provide. Hang in there and I will too. God bless you.
The AF vet should consider having someone look after his boys and seek help at he nearest VA. Seriously, David, your health needs to be the best you can achieve, so as to look agter your boys. We need not be ashamed to seek help. Just walk in there and ask for directions to the ER. There are millions of others like us that do not have a place to get healthcare help. We should give the poor the benefit of the doubt.
I'm watching your program on the ppl out of work...PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE refer them all to the American Red Cross there ARE PAYING jobs within our organization. Mostly in biomedical services. These are good paying jobs WITH BENEFITS!!!!! They do NOT have to struggle, to suffer from failure, from loss of self worth. I've been down their road, knowing all to well the feeling of hopelessness. If you need further information please refer to www.redcrossjobs.org There is where all will find the hope they've lost! I care.
my wife is from the nelsonville area and we live obout 50 miles from there in gallia county, im laid off 3 months behind on rent, fighting off buckeye rural electric, this place needs jobs
Looks like a lot of people in line at the food pantry have not missed a meal. All overweight people waiting in line for more food.
unfortunately, the poor are forced to eat meals that are low cost but high fat/carbs for ex: to buy a box of spaghetti and sauce does not cost very much and can feed a handful of people, but is high in carbs. It cost more to buy some healthy chicken breasts and vegetables and fruit.
I hope someday you are where these people have been and maybe you won't be so quick to judge others.
Bread, rice and potatoes are far less costly than meat, fish, fruits and vegetables.
I have been where these people are. I pulled myself out of it by working.
There is a direct correlation between poverty and obesity. As others stated, it is much cheaper to eat high fat, high carb foods which are included in food pantries. But as the Ohio governor said on the show ('m paraphrasing), it's fashionable now in the US to hate the poor. Maybe that's because you can then justify your lack of human compassion.
Over-weight does not mean that the people have been eating healthy. A box of Little Debbie cakes (with more calories, carbs, and fat grams) can be had for as little as 99 cents.....while a good salad can cost quite a bit more! If people on here are being judgmental, it tells me that they have never been out of work or without food, shelter, or a means to provide utilities and necessities for themselves or their families. I have. I've ALWAYS worked hard. There have been times in my life when I have been laid off and have been without food, and without a place to sleep except a broken-down car. But I kept trying! At this point, I've been laid off for a year. With 28 years of experience behind me, and after making around $20/hour.....now, because I have to work, I'm taking anything I can find. I work a minimum wage job where I work harder than I ever did for the larger pay. And now, due to the economy, even this job is going sour.....they have cut hours back to approximately 18 hours...that's not not 18 hours a week....it's 18 hours a month! There just are not many jobs out there - and there ARE a lot of people in need of a job - so it's an employer's market....if he/she doesn't like you, there is always someone else's application to look at!
I don't smoke or drink, but I do still look very feminine. And I do my OWN French Manicures at home.....just because you have no money NOW, does not mean that you don't have the supplies at home to make yourself look good. In my case, I have to keep trying because I'm still doing a job search.
Before you judge people, pleeeeeeeease think about how you would feel if you were walking in their shoes!
Our of Work in Ohio
THAT is what you got from this very disturbring report?! I feel sorry for you
Thomas, I hope to God you are just trying to get attention, because the way you are acting, looks like you will be down that road again. And this time, people will be there to judge you the same as you've judged others.
Do you know what these people wind up eating? Starches: potatoes, macaroni and cheese, pasta. Anything that is cheap to cook and eat. And that is what makes them gain weight. You have no clue what these people are up against...especially the prejudice from people like you. And most of these horrible comments I am reading I would dare say are from "good Christian people." Well, what would Jesus say?
Congratulations to Dateline and Ann Curry for airing this very important story. It sickens me that there are people in this country who have to live like this. We seem to help people in other countries more than we do our own. Where are the celebrity "do-gooders'? Why aren't they having concerts and fundraisers for the hungry in our country.
I agree with you Barbara-2064893. Charity begins at home, but I guess people and ESPECIALLY the government forgot this. I feel bad for people and children in other countries who are hungry, etc..but I feel WORSE for the people and children of the USA who are going hungry, etc. There should be no reason for this. We are so quick to help others but not our own. I feel for the kids the most in this story. THEY did not ask to be born and yet, here they are. I fault that one girl who is 21 and has 3 kids. Hello honey, you got pregnant when you were a junior in high school and yet you go and get pregnant again after the first one. I can see making a mistake and getting pregnant once, but TWO more times when you can't afford to take care of the first one you had. SHAMEFUL!!! The state should take her kids until she can get her act together. Let's see how fast she moves then.
In her defense, she did love and care for her children as best she could, even living in a car with them. I certainly agree with you about the birth control and Ann Curry asked her about that. Glad to see in the end of the story, she was able to get into some decent housing, but doubt the singing career will materalize. What many people have missed in this story is--there are NO jobs to be had, not much industry in the area, store after store closed, out of business signs. Ms Curry made it clear, they people WANT to work, but there just is nothing for them there. And yes, I guess they could all pack up and move--do you think that might cost a little too??
Azgypsy,
YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF!!!
She has her act together. She now has an apartment, and she is working her ASS off to make a better life for her children. DID YOU NOT WATCH THE EPISODE THROUGH TO THE END?! Obviously not. Because you would have known that. Maybe someone should take your children, because they obviously aren't being taught compassion for others.
Why aren't you willing to believe someone did her nails. You don't have to go to a salon for a manicure. It is a shame that we are so willing to judge so swiftly.
I agree totally...you can buy the material to do a manicure for nothing...the life style of this poor person gives her the right to have a french manicure. Shame on those who feel differently.
Would this be same Kathy Kidd that use to live in Dallas and worked for Sanger-Harris years ago?
Okay, seriously. How do you know that Dateline didn't get her nails done for her? I cannot believe that people are focusing on her nails and necklace. The thing is, that necklace is probably out of a gum ball machine somewhere. But you know what? If one of her kids gave it to her, I bet that necklace is worth more than gold!
Honestly, you had my heart, until the 21 year old mother of THREE!!! Three? Really? And then when Ann asks about birth control, did anyone ever teach her, the answer, "yes, but accidents happen." . I wanted my heart to feel full, to feel giving as I watched this piece. Ann, you did a wonderful job of telling these stories. No insult to you. It's like everything in life, it only takes a few people to ruin it for everyone else. I hope Anita keeps finding a way to help those who really need it. Maybe she should distribute some condoms with food. I mean really!!
honestly my mother was never there i had to learn lessons the hard way so please back off!!
sadly that is not uncommon in low income areas and obviously kids make poor choices.... but how could you ever turn away from or not have compassion for a suffering child?
Back off lady!!! If she can't afford to eat, how the hell is she gonna buy birth control?!?! Do you realize how expensive that can be? You obviously don't understand a damn thing about poverty. Or how much your comments could hurt someones feelings.
Crystal, don't let all these negative comments get to you girl. You are doing a good job, you and your kids have your own place to live now, and things are looking up. DON'T LET IGNORANT PEOPLE RUIN IT FOR YOU!!!
My husband remembers the Great Depression all too well. We need to bring back the CCC, WPA, etc. We need to stop wasting money, resources, and lives in wars and start rebuilding America. It is shameful that America's children are going hungry and that parents are hopeless. Maybe our elected politicians need to give up their salaries until Americans are back to work.
i saw a history channel report about the CCC, it was amazing. I totally agree. LEt's bring it back
AMEN!! My parents were children of the depression and my grandfather was fortunate enough to get work with the WPA in our community. Mom always proudly pointed out projects that he worked on. Those initiatives not only gave some financial relief to famillies, but a sense of pride that carries on through the generations. Let's give today's families the same opportunities!
You are so right about the WPA and CCC, that would employ thousands and the work they did then STILL stands in many parks and bridges today.
Public service should not be a means of getting rich. That is why congress is opposed to not extending tax cuts to the wealthy. It would affect all of them! They will never give up their salaries.
Ok, let's be clear ppl...poor ppl that are overweight is due to CHEAP food, eating well costs MONEY something they don't have. As for the french manicure? Hmmmm...well I've cut costs by doing my own hair doing my own french manicure. It never ceases to amaze me how ppl criticize others, WALK A MILE THEIR SHOES...or wait perhaps you wouldn't be able to handle it. Here's a thought instead of voicing your obvious displeasure to watch poor ppl I suggest changing the channel...I'm sure there's show that's less offensive to your senibilities.
However, for the young woman living in a car with three young children using the excuse of "accidents happen" is unacceptable. Birth control has been around for 40yrs, unwanted pregnancies do not have to happen. And if she can't afford her children then it is her responsiblity to make a hard choice on behalf of her children's welfare...foster care or having relatives care for them while she gets on her feet. Children should NOT have to suffer poverty...as parents it is our responsibility to make sacrifices and the ultimate is the selfless act of asking someone in a better position to care our children when we cannot.
I agree about the 21 year old who is on the street, still having babies. After the first baby, there is no accidents. She knows where they come from and she can do something about not having anymore. She was a straight A student. She needs to let someone else take care of her children and she needs to go to school (which the gov. will pay for) and get herself a job, then take care of the children. It is not their fault and they need to be taken care of, but she can work. And the subsidized housing she now has, I'm glad for the children, but that is not going to cost her. She will be right back to having more babies if someone doesn't make her understand that these children are her responsibility and make her take care of it.
Nancy, I am going to be honest with you. When I read your post, I wanted to vomit. You cut costs by doing your own hair and getting your own manicure?? REALLY? Most people from this area couldn't afford to go to the dollar store and buy fake nails to do their own. Your rediculous money saving ideas have nothing to do with what this program was about. Getting a manicure is the last thing on anyones mind.
I am from the small town of Nelsonville, And I know the 21 year old mother personally. Yes, Accidents do happen. And Yes, there are tons of forms of birth control out there. But what happens when you can't afford to go to the doctor because you don't have insurance, or what happens when you can't get to planned parenthood that is 30 MINUTES away from where you live because either you don't have a car, or you have no money for gas to get there? Yes, she made mistakes. She got pregnant young. But she does everything that she can for those babies. She is the epitome of the selfless mother. I have seen times when Crystal has gone hungry to make sure the kids had their bellies full. Around here, you do what you can with what you have. Her children are happy, they are healthy, and she makes sure that they have what they need even if she has to go without. They are such sweet, polite kids, and they are thankful for every single thing that they have. Yes, they had to live in a van. But that was all they had. They weren't sleeping out in the middle of a field in the snow, were they? They were inside a shelter with blankets to keep warm, and they were all together. Having family take care of the kids was never an option, because she doesn't have much family, and those that she does have are in situations much like her own. And to those babies their Mama and their brothers and sister are all that they have. Do you really think that taking them away would be better for them?
How come noone is focusing on the good things that Crystal has done? At the end of the program, they showed her and the kids moving into their own apartment. The Nelsonville Community Center paid for her deposit to move in, and provided all of the furniture in her apartment. They even provided the food to last her until the end of the month. She is trying to better herself and her family. It seems to me that everyone wants to focus on what she has done in the past, and not what she is doing to try to change it.
I think that it is really sad that someone could be so ignorant. You do not know these people. You have obviously never been in their situation, if the only thing you have to worry about is doing your hair and nails yourself. Don't be so discriminating until you walk a mile in their shoes.
I would like to help the three small children that Crystal has by providing clothes, food, or whatever they might need but I would also like to pay for Birth Control for Crystal. She has to stop bringing children into this world that she canot provide for.She can contact me at CathyPez@hotmail.com

We cant help because we are a family of 5 living from paycheck to paycheck. But I would like you to know to keep airing stories like these. If you change just 1 person in each state, you will make a difference to 50 people. My difference? I currently go to a food pantry. But as hard a time as we are having, I feel I have to give up my place for another family to keep them afloat. We may be living paycheck to paycheck but I do feel that I need to help while we still can. As I mention before, although I cant give any money, I can give up my spot for another family. Please continue to give America hope....Thank you.
This show is unbelieveable ! We would love to help someone in Ohio and would welcome an email from someone who would be willing to move to PA. If someone needs a home for themselves or their family and is prepared to look for work then they arrive we would like to help. Daniel zimmerman from the show should write to us on dykinpa@comcast.net. We don't have a lot but we are willing to share what we have with someone who needs a chance to recover from their current situation.
I watched the Dateline Special and it is very sad that there are parts of this country that are seeing such heartache. But, there is heartache all over this country. I lost my job last year in May. I have been going to school since last fall and it has been very hard. I am 57 years old and had not set foot in a classroom in almost 40 years. The middle class is slowly being strangled out of this country. You are either going to be poor or rich and there won't be any in-between. Things are bad yes. But, I hate to say it that things are probably worse before they get better.
Julie it is not a crime to have babies that shouldnt cause you to be poor and having children is a gift
Not when you can't take care of your children. Having the first child was an accident...having the other two was on purpose. She could have gotten free birth control if she just asked. Also, having children and raising them cost a lot of money.
It makes me angry when I see this level of need in the U.S. and consider the billions of dollars that the U.S. sends overseas in the form of economic and military aid. The leaders of our country have indeed forgotten the notion that "charity begins at home".
I too was moved by this story. Hard to believe so many people struggling and Nancy Pelosi's budget for flowers and jetting back and forth to SanFrancisco could help so many. Where is the accountability of the government with all there spending when our country is in such need.
I enjoyed your presentation Ann and I know extreme poverty exists there and I have seen it in many other places in this country and here in Virginia where I live - BUT I have to comment on the Mother who could not properly feed her children puffing away on cigarettes (yes even on camera yet) and I just cringe!!
I agree. That was unbelievable that the woman was smoking on camera. While I believe her struggles are real and will definitely donate to the friends and neighbors program, I find it offensive and ridiculous that she has the nerve to smoke, especially on live television. Smoking cost a lot of money. I'm sure the cost of her cigarettes could put food in those children's mouths. Please get your priorities straight.
I believe the gentleman names Zimmerman with the two boys is in need of some support.
Have never responded to anything on TV before but this really touched my heart. I can help with job in Quads Cities, Iowa and is not a closing business. In very good shape and if interested can help. Always looking for people who want to work and do a great job. Would love to help if possible.
Susie p. if he needs a vehicle, I have an '85 Jeep that'll keep them dry in the winter. Been wanting to donate it but couldn't part with it. BUT NOW... I can let it go to someone that can make use ot it.
Pls respond.
I'll certainly help. money for gas. school supplies for his kids.
I just can't stop thinking about Mr. Zimmerman, I really would like to help him out. I have been very blessed in my life. If Susie Parker has a job in the quad cities I would like to help him get set up. Please let me know how I could help. nbfochs@gmail.com
I grew up near Columbus Ohio and have lived in North East Ohio for the past 16 years. I am very fortunate to have a very good paying job that allows us to live comfortabley with my husband staying home to raise our 4 year old son. As I watched this report last night, Mr. Zimmerman's story had a huge impact on me and although we contribute to our local food bank, and give genreously to "family adoption" programs during Christmas, I couldn't help but wonder how I could extend this giving throughout the year. If anyone knows of an organization that allows you to "adopt" a family like Mr. Zimmerman's on an ongoing basis, or if Mr. Zimmerman himself can rech out to me, please email me at bethmurdoch@ymail.com.
I would also like to help Mr. Zimmerman...I think his story touched me the most. Please let me know what I can do for him. JJkaty@aol.com
I too would like to help Mr. Zimmerman and his family I understand him willingly wanting to give his life to feed his children. I am a single Mother and I don't won a business and I don't have much but I am willing to share what I have. Please let me know what I can do to help him and his boys.
I to wish to help Mr. Zimmerman. I may not be able to do much, but what I can do will be done willing. I can help with clothing for the boys, school suppies, books if needed ........ I can help with household furnishing to help him set up a home in the Quad Cities. Please some one help him get there and help will arrive............ Right now his emotional needs and that of his two boy are what is important right now........... save one save many................. Please let me know what I can do to help... Magsfolly007@aol.com
where is bill gate, oprah winfreyand bloomberg and those bllionire, help this poor people instead of sending the money overseas!!!we need help here!
I agree ......I guess it is more fashionable to adopt trendy babies from Africa and build schools when children in our own country go unadopted and without....I do not understand !
OK, I have a question - why don't we send the illegals back to Mexico and open up some jobs for these Americans. I wish you would have asked these people if they would be willing to pick fruit, work at McDonalds, clean Hotels, etc for a paycheck and a way out. Don't tell me there are jobs out there which Americans won't do. By the way, I've done some of those hard jobs myself in my 50 years and so have members of my family.
Most Anmericans don't wanna work in the sun for low wages. So these people are willing to do what it takes. Because of the fact they are going hungry. We're not far from that, if we don't step up & bring back our jobs. By first stop buying forgien cars, clothing, & other products. Maybe we could overcome this problem. So lets not forget about our forfathers & bring back our most beloved GOD. Beginning by loving each other & maybe he will bless us like he did our forfathers. Don't forget we all come from forgien lands.
I just watched your story on food pantries on tonight's show. As an employee of the largest food bank, we have seen a population increase of 145% in the last year or so. We are seeing people who are unemployed, underemployed, and furloughed (even from state government). I would like to invite you to come and see the new face of the hungry in the South as a follow-up.
Thank you for this informative report!
Why would you have five children you can not take care or feed , then complain about not being able to take care of them?
Thank you, my sentiments exactly!!!!!
thank you!!.......it seems like a simple concept, but, why is so hard for for some individuals to understand!!???............don't have children that you cannot afford!!.......again, "simple"!!!!!..........and "accidents happen" is just a sorry, pathetic excuse to justify irresponsible sexual behavior......you want to have a "good time", but, they never think of the consequences.......after having one baby, it is ludicrous to say "accidents happen" to justify having more!!.......are you kidding me??
People, People, People..... Children are GIFTS from GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
.....and from his rib, he made a suitable partner for Man.
.....go forth and multiply.
Dear Lord, Sometimes we can be selfish.
re: krystal, mother of 3: pls. get in touch. we would like to send some things for the children. fountainofyouth888@yahoo.com. (need their pamper/huggie sizes) 'Judge ye not, lest with the same measure ye judge ye will face the same judgement..."-Holy Bible

I'm glad somone else attended church this weekend and is inspired by God.
Hi Crystal...I hope this is really you and finds you well. Please e-mail me at alishamaroney@hotmail.com and let me know things that can be helpful to you...diapers, clothes...whatever. I am a mom of a 2 year old daughter, 6 year old son and 7 year old son. I can't imagine living life in your circumstance. If there is anything I can do to personally help, please let me know. Thanks!
Hi Crystal, your story touched us deeply. Please let us know how to help. Sipes03@comcast.net
Crystal, I am a struggling single mom going to college at Hocking. Even though I dont have much to spare I feel deeply for you and I would love to give you the clothes my son grows out of along with some other things I will be contacting the nelsonville community center soon. You can contact me at lil_sunshine7081@yahoo.com I look forward to hearing from you!!
I just finished watching Dateline and was really touched by show with Ann Curry. It is often easy for us to judge others when we are sitting in our homes, air conditioned, plenty of food and find fault with those less fortunate, painted nails, overweight, smoking. These were comments from others on the web. However, Jesus said, "Ye without sin, cast the first stone". I saw the faces of the elderly, the children and they are the ones that are suffering. We all spend money on things that we don't really need. Some of us know how to spend our money better than others. I just made a donation. If anyone has the means, I hope you will step up and help those who are less fortuante than you are.
That is the problem!!! They get help but seem to do nothing about it. They receive more help than anyone I know!! I am all for helping someone but how long do you just keep handing them everything and then they do nothing!
I would really like to help these less fortunate people out, but when I see them living 14 in a house and they still have the money and the means to purchase cigarettes when they are absolutely destitute and crying over others having to provide for their children....I am not so sure...
Your show was very moving and necessary....even though it was hard to hear a 21 year old, straight A student, say that "accidents happen".... her children should not have to suffer for her major league mistakes by living in a car. I don't think you'll get positive feedback regarding the lady who can afford $5 per pack cigarettes either, but can't afford food.... Overall your story was very moving.... I will continue to do my part and donate to feed the children as well as Lisa Roberts' Food Pantry....what is the Obama administration doing to help? where are all the jobs his administration promised to create? These people want to keep their pride and dignity by working!
The show from last night has sat on my mind all day especially about this young girl and her plight with her 3 young children. Those of us with so much have a hard time understanding those with so little. My heart ached today thinking about this happening in our country. God ask that we act as good stewards and help our neighbors in times of need. I will pray and help in anyway I can.
